A year and half ago when I first got sick and we decided that this would be our journey to seize this one wild and precious life, dragonflies came to me. Now, as some of you know, Jacob and I are not religious people subscribing to one particular dogma but we are beyond a doubt spiritual people. I have for some time believed that the universe (or whatever you might call the spirit beyond the clouds) sends us signs. Many cultures believe this too and if these messages are in animal form they are designated spirit animals.
I still can recall quite vividly the day they came. There was a knock at the door and when I opened it I was greeted with a shocked face of our real estate agent who had come to price the house. She pointed to the front yard, just beyond her, to a black cloud floating freely. With closer inspection the black cloud materialized into a swarm of dragonflies; the most I have ever seen in my life. They danced around the house in a reassuring flutter with iridescent color.
At that time I had been discussing with Jacob that something deep inside my core was calling us to leave our home and venture. My intuition, a true super power many of us have learned to quiet or ignore over the years, was leading me/us in another direction. Our logical brains were saying "this is crazy" and we were really nervous about the visit with the real estate agent because this would be us following the path of craziness or as I like to believe my "super power."
After the real estate agent left, I ran inside and looked up what the spirit animal, dragonflies, mean and found confirmation that our new chapter in life should begin. Dragonflies are believed in Native American culture to be the bringers of change. When a dragonfly enters your life it is to show the way to a purposeful life.
Life is cyclical, so it is no surprise to me that at our first destination on this journey, New Bern, NC, we were greeted with an abundance of dragonflies, every color imaginable.
